You are your best company.

Today I went to a friend's house after a while, to inquire about his health.

Always a gregarious & playful fellow, I was astonished to find him in a state of acute depression. His face has grown pale, his eyes have sunken.

Barely able to speak, my widower friend mumbled, "Sharma ji, I have lost zest for life.'

"What has happened to you dear?" I asked.

"My only son got job in US last year leaving me alone here." he said with his gaze downwards.

"If your son is happily employed in US and is unable to make frequent visits to India to meet you, then you should go there."

"I went there but there's more loneliness out there. People are so busy, have no time for a retired, old man like me."

"Engage yourself in your favorite hobbies, teach poor children. Start relishing your own company." I adviced.

This is not an isolated case. I regularly encounter many elderly who have become gloomy as their children have flown out of their nests, to build their own ones.

My sincere suggestion to all in their 50s and above is :

"You are your best company. You cannot rely on someone for company all the time. No matter the amount of time you fill up with talking to your children or meeting people, there will be times when you are alone. Instead of craving for company, make friends with your loneliness. Children have their own lives. Unleash them. In fact loneliness is a blessing because it lets you explore yourself."
