Who can remain happy here?
At the recently organized symposium on "How to attain happiness?" held at Central State Library, Chandigarh, I was invited, asked to air my views on the subject.
The audience mainly comprised of retirees and people aged 40+.
Before airing my views, I asked a fair coloured gentleman from the audience, "Sir, are you happy?"
"No Sir" came the prompt reply.
"Quite obvious. That's why we all are here, to find happiness." I said with a smile.
"Well, without mincing words, I firmly believe that those amongst us who haven't found happiness yet, there's almost nil chance that they would find it now." I said emphatically.
Seeing me talk like this, the stunned moderator said, "But Sir we have come here to find some ways for happiness."
"Sir, there are no ways. This world appeals to only two kinds of people - Idiots and Clever (Manipulators). Only they can remain perennially happy here."
"Idiots know nothing. You see ignorance is bliss. Manipulators can always have what they want either by deceit or by flattering people of influence."
"Then who are unhappy in this world?" asked a sexagenarian with a goatee beard from the audience.
"Sir, two types of people are the most unhappy in this world - Intellectuals and Sensitive." I said.
"Why are sensitive people unhappy?"
"This world is full of miseries and sufferings. Sensitive people earnestly want to obliterate them. But they don't have enough resources. So they are unhappy."
"And why are intellectuals unhappy Sir?" asked the same person.
"Sir, noted American novelist Ernest Hemingway has rightly said - Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing. The fact is that this world is not made for them" I said.
"Intellectuals see and experience from a pretty early age the true nature of this world. They know that all here is changeable. They know that their loved ones will not remain forever. They know that worldly happiness is transitory. So how can they be happy?"
"Also most of the intellectuals are loners, don't socialize much because :
(a) Most of the people are not able to understand them. How can a droplet understand a mighty sea!
(b) Intellectuals are well aware that majority of the people here are just acting. And they can't stand fakes, meaningless drama people."
"Sir, the position of intellectuals was unenviable, is unenviable, will be unenviable. They know well that they are caged birds in this prison world. They want to run away, run away from all this nonsense, run away from themselves. They are dying every moment. It's truly said that those whom the God wants to punish, they are sent on this planet as intellectuals." I said and got up from my chair.
